Re-exploring tradition

To bring the rich authentic Jewish Torah tradition of Hungary, back to its glory.

The roots are here. What we aim to do is to rediscover them. Let's take care on them, provide them with water - "Water is Torah" (Ein Mayim Elah Torah), and we will merit to see them blooming again!

Torah Judaism has deep roots and rich tradition in Hungary. Torah giants of Hungary, - The Chasam Sofer, his sons and disciples in particular - made the world shine and received a very high reputation across the Jewish world for eternity.

  • Unfortunately after the second World War, when not many Orthodox Jews remained alive, while many of those who survived left Hungary, and more so after the 1956 revolution (forradalom) after which very few Orthodox Jews remained in Hungary, the tradition of Hungarian Orthodox Judaism migrated to Jewish centres worldwide, and seemed to be forgotten in its place of origin, Hungary itself.

However, Jewish people are still present in Hungary in big numbers, with different types of organisations and groups dealing with them, but very few possibilities to find representation of original authentic Orthodoxy as it used to be with all of its glory.

TJH is here to give back life to this noble distinctive hefty branch of the tree of life - the holy Torah, in the way Hungarian Torah leaders handed it over to us from Prophet Moshe who received the Torah from the Al-mighty on Mount Sinai, till our generation, and to make it flourish again in the very same place where it used to flourish – Hungary.

Our aim

  • The Torah is our life. It’s obligatory for a Jew to set specific times of Torah learning on a daily basis, at daytime and at night. Besides every spare minute should be used for Torah learning.

At the moment, it is quite challenging to find in Budapest an Orthodox place where one can come and learn the holy Torah, with all necessary facilities, e.g. spacious place, Sforim (books), furniture, air-conditioning, etc. The absence is felt and the demand for such a place is growing. TJH has made a serious effort to operate such a place, but a substantial support is necessary to bring this place upto the high level we aspire to.

  • Education! One of the core main obligations of a Jewish person – to pass further our faith and Torah to the next generations. So many Torah commandments are connected to Chinuch (education), from reading of Shma to the Seder (Passover) night, and much more.

At the moment, there is not in Hungary a place for parents who are interested to give authentic Jewish Orthodox education for their children. To open such a place is quite an undertaking, but TJH has made already the first step, by opening a place where toddlers can come and soak in a true Torah atmospheres and education. We’re certain that 'with the food will come the appetite', and more parents will want to give their children original Torah education. Substantial support is required for this sacred essential task.

  • “Then they that feared G-od spoke one with another, and G-od hearkened and heard” (book of Malachi, 3, 16)

Meeting each other is always useful for those who wish to elevate their level of spirituality. Coming together on Holidays and other occasions, helps to cement the feeling of togetherness and cohesion, a thing which has a great importance everywhere, particularly in Hungary, where the Orthodox community is not very sizable.

Eating meals together, listening to words of the Torah, speeches, celebrating Jewish holidays, and doing other activities jointly, brings the hearts closer, and serve well our purpose of rebuilding Jewish Orthodox life in Hungary.

  • The foundation of a Jewish family is a Mikveh (place for religious immersion). Jewish family lives and bringing future generations to the world, are impossible without a Mikveh.

TJH has a dream, better say a vision, to open in Hungary a Mikveh, which will be built with latest and highest standards of architecture, comfort and hygiene, and more importantly, according to the Orthodox tradition and rulings, as it used to be in Hungary throughout generations, with no undesired additions which stem from other foreign influences. Such a project will obviously be made with the constant and tight supervision of Orthodox Rabbinical authorities.

If you have a warm corner in your heart for bringing more Tahara (purity) to the world, and to Hungary in particular, and you would like to participate in this holy mission – please contact us!

  • There are real treasures of Torah and Judaism writings / material in the Hungarian language, treasures or perhaps rather relics which are on the brink of extinction / disappearance, since almost nobody put an effort to reach, save, and preserve them.

TJH invest great effort and funds to find these precious gems and to edit and publish them for the public, particularly to the Hungarian speaking Jewish community, who will benefit from having access to original authentic Jewish (reading and learning) material in their mother tongue.

some examples can be found in the Hungarian section dealing with this subject, here on our website:

Thanks to the Al-mighty, We've been able to do a lot of constructive work, in order to preserve, promote, and enhance true Torah Judaism in Hungary. We have much greater plans and aspirations for the future, plans that are definitely doable, but require substantial support. We invite you to take a part in our noble actions, and to participate in reviving again, true Judaism in Hungary, the place where numberless Torah Giants and Zadikim shined every town and village. May their Zchuss (merit) will stand for you and for all who surround you, to be granted from Heaven with health, happiness, peace, and all blessings.

You can dedicate a day of Torah learning in our place, or any other activity or occasion, for the soul (Leilui Nishmas) of the departed ones, in a time of a Simcha, etc.

Tizku Le'Mizves (may you have the merit of observing the commandments of the Torah) and all blessings.
